Our pro helping you out is Sonny Remlinger, a multi-hyphenate musician and landscape designer based in California.

Setting the Foundation With a Container Garden

"One of the best things about gardening is that it can be done anywhere," Sonny says. "If you have a balcony, porch, or even just a windowsill, you can create a beautiful and bountiful container garden."

To get started, he recommends finding a spot that gets the right amount of sunlight during the day. A good container garden includes a variety of plants and it's important to make sure they all can coexist peacefully and grow together. Because they'll be living in the same pot, they should be plants that need the same similar amounts of both water and light.

But picking which plants to put in your garden is just the first step--there's a lot more you need to know, and Sonny's got you covered in his DIY Container Class.

How-To Arrange Your Plants in an Herb Planter

Herbs are a great choice for gardening because you eventually get to eat them, and nothing in the world tastes better than food you've grown yourself. The plants you choose to include are important, but it's important to remember that appearances matter. In this how-to, Sonny shows us how to design and arrange a veggie herb planter for good growth and good looks, too. Watch the full how-to here.

How-To Water Your Garden

Watering a garden is important because, well, plants need water to live. But there's a right way and a wrong way to do it. This is especially true if you're planting new herbs or vegetables, but it goes for pretty much anything in your garden. Check out Sonny's method here.

How-To Fertilize Your Garden

Fertilizer is important because it adds nutrients to the soil that help plants grow. But over-fertilizing can be just as bad as not fertilizing at all, so it's important to find the right balance. Sonny has some tips on how to do just that in his how-to here.

How-To Clean Your Pruning Sheers

Pruning sheers are one of the most important tools in a gardener's arsenal, so it's important to keep them clean and sharp. You can't just use any old soap, though--the wrong cleanser can damage or even kill your precious veggies. Sonny shows us the right way to do it in this how-to.

How-To Get Root Bound Plants Out of Pots

Whether you're buying your own plants or growing them yourself, you'll probably find yourself transferring a vegetable from one pot to the other. If the container your plant is in feels a little tight, don't worry. Using pruners or clippers, cut down the side of the pot to free your plant. Learn more and watch Sonny do it himself in this how-to.
